The spike and crash effect of today's sports nutrition products. (Click graph to enlarge)
The typical ill effects of several of today's sports drinks on blood glucose are evidenced by the results of our internal trials that are shown in this graph. There is a rapid increase in blood glucose followed by a dramatic decline below normal, if not consumed repeatedly. These products also elevate blood insulin levels and potently inhibit mobilization and utilization of fat as a fuel. These cyclical patterns of rise and fall in glucose and insulin overtime cause impaired health, resulting in the onset type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Sports Nutrition products were initially launched as hydration products with the primary purpose of replacing their electrolytes lost during activity, the 'first' generation sports drinks. These then evolved into the 'second' generation of products which added glucose, maltodextrin and other carbohydrate sources for 'energy'. The presence of these simple sugars and maltodextrin in the so-called 'energy' drinks resulted in spike and crash, the need for repeat dosing, gastric distress, impaired metabolic state and adverse effects on overall health.
